Rockstar North has given two unusually direct answers about Grand Theft Auto VI: the single-player story will not contain real-money microtransactions, and generative AI is not part of the game.

The answers came after Kinda Funny hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller visited Rockstar North and put both questions to co-studio head Rob Nelson. In each case, the reported answer was simply no.

No real-money purchases in GTA VI’s story mode

Cortez said he asked whether players could use real-world money to buy items in the game. Nelson’s answer ruled out monetisation inside the single-player experience, meaning the campaign is not being built around paid currency, cosmetic purchases or shortcuts bought with cash.

That is an important distinction for a game in which earning money, stealing valuable vehicles and building up Jason and Lucia’s lives are central to the experience. Those systems should operate as part of the story and its progression rather than as a route to a digital shop.

What Rockstar has answered

GTA VI’s single-player story will not let players spend real money on in-game items.

Rockstar also says no to generative AI

Miller said he asked directly whether AI was in the game and again received a no. The discussion concerned generative AI: technology used to create material such as dialogue, voices, artwork, music or other content from prompts or existing data.

That does not mean GTA VI contains no artificial intelligence at all. Traffic, pedestrians, police, enemies and other characters rely on traditional game AI to react to the player. Rockstar’s answer instead addresses the concern that parts of Leonida might be filled with automatically generated creative content.

It is also sensible not to stretch the answer beyond what was asked. The comments tell us generative AI is not part of the finished game; they do not provide a technical audit of every software tool used by every developer during production.

What about the next GTA Online?

This is where the caveat matters. Rockstar did not provide details when Kinda Funny asked about the next version of GTA Online. The current GTA Online includes Shark Cards and other real-money purchases, so the single-player answer should not be treated as confirmation that a future online mode will also launch without microtransactions.

Until Rockstar explains its online plans, the accurate position is straightforward: no story-mode microtransactions have been confirmed, while monetisation for the next GTA Online remains unknown.

Why both answers matter

GTA VI is built around an unusually detailed and reactive world. A clear commitment to human-made creative work gives players more confidence that its characters, performances and environments have been deliberately authored rather than generated to fill space.

Keeping real-money purchases out of the story also protects its economy and progression. If a car, property or weapon matters, its value can be earned and understood inside Leonida instead of being undermined by a separate payment option.

When does GTA VI release?

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date.

More detail about GTA Online, post-launch content and any future monetisation will need to come directly from Rockstar. For now, the story-mode and generative-AI answers are both clear — and both are good news for players who want the campaign to feel complete and carefully crafted from the start.
